Bin-luh,

I remember you.  Thank you for your story on Eashy.  I still remember his contagious smiles back in our EE days.  But time went so fast, I never met him again since
graduation…

When you come to SF Bay Area next time, be sure to see us here.  There are a bunch of us in the Silicon Valley.

Take care,

Subject: Letter to classmates

Dear classmates:

My name is Binluh Cheng.  I was a transfer student from the ME to the EE department during 1962 (our junior year).  Many of you might not know me well.

I attended our classmate Eashy Yang's funeral on August 14, 2006.  Shortly after the funeral, classmate Mark Yang of Gainesville, FL contacted me about Eashy's passing
away and asked me to write an email to share some information with other classmates about Eashy.  I told him I would be happy to do so.  However, the terminal illness
and death of my stepmother and other family problems that followed had me occupied and made me emotionally unable to do the job.  I want to apologize to all our
classmates for the untimely delay.  It is my fault, please forgive me.

Eashy and I attended Chiao-Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan for our MS degrees after military service.  We went to the US in 1967 to pursue our PhD degrees; he studied
at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and completed his program in 1969.  He started to work as an engineer at North Nature Gas, Inc in Omaha, Nebraska right after his
graduation.  Eashy was transferred to Oklahoma and Texas with the same company and eventually became VP of Operations for International North Nature Gas, Inc.

According to Eashy's wife Jean, he just started to feel a little discomfort in January, 2006 and complained of getting tired easily.  He took a regular annual physical check up
in early March the same year.  At that check up, his physician recommended a triple bypass operation the very next day.  He had another operation in late March to remove
part of his stomach due to bleeding. In that operation, his physicians suspected that he might have stomach cancer, yet they were not sure.  He seemed to recover well after
the two operations and regained a considerable amount of the weight he had lost in March. However, Eashy was definitively diagnosed with stomach cancer at the end of
June.  He then decided to take chemotherapy and tried the newly released medicine in early August.  Unfortunately, after one week of chemotherapy and taking the new
medicine, his white blood cell counts dropped tremendously and he was admitted to the hospital on August 6.  He became unconscious on August 8 and passed away on
August 9, 2006 at 3 AM.

Eashy's funeral was held at Champagne Forest Funeral Home of Spring, Texas on August 15, 2006.  The farewell ceremony was attended by lots of his colleagues, friends
and relatives.  Among them were four of his classmates from Chiao-Tung University; they came from Houston, California and Florida.  Eashy was survived by his wife Jean,
two daughters (Jennifer, an electrical engineer and Angela, a physician), two sons-in-law and one grandson.

As we all know, Eashy was a very strong and healthy person.  He loved all kinds of sports and was good at all of them. Many of us might still remember his fascinating pool
skills in our old college days.  He also had a low key and friendly personality that made people around him feel easy and comfortable.  As one of our dear fellow classmates,
I believe Eashy will be forever alive in our memory.

Finally, let me tell you a little bit about myself.  I graduated from Michigan State University along with classmates M.H. Hong and L.R. Hsieh many years ago.  I have three
sons: Jimming, Winston and Warren.  I am still teaching at Florida A&M University but will be retired on April 30, 2007, saying goodbye to the field of EE.  I am living in a small
house in the middle of woods in a remote country side and plan to become a farmer after the retirement.  Anybody interested in country living is welcome to visit me at my
simple small house in Havana, Florida.

We know each other as teenage boys in 1960, now we all become old fathers and grand fathers.  It is hard to believe so many years had been passed.  Time is really flying
too fast isn't it?  I wish we all pay special attention to our health and enjoy life for another "many" years

Dear Bin-luh,

Thank you so much for writing such a long letter at midnight, regarding the untimely passing away of Eashy.  To our great relief, Eashy had lived a very fruitful life with great
accomplishments, both in career and in family.

It is also nice to know that you intend to be a farmer. This is the healthiest activity one can do after retirement.  Good for you.

I have been in Florida for 36 years and do not know there is a town called Havana. It must be a place totally hidden in the woods.
