Taiwan Island Village: 台灣島村: Hsinchu (Xinzhu) High School Reminisced 憶竹中 忆竹中

I went to Taiwan quite often in the past few years. I was on the Advisory Committee of the President of
the National Chung-Hsing University in Taichung for two years. I was appointed as a commissioner by
the President for the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (Chiao-Wu-Wei-Yuan) for a three year term
which ended December 2009. In fact, I took my wife to visit HCHS in 2007 by ourselves and took many
pictures of the campus. That was the first time after I graduated from HCHS. If I can attend our reunion, it
will be great. If not, it is OK. I am quite familiar with what is going on in Taiwan (such as political and
educational issues). I will continue to assist in organizing the reunion as much as I can by contacting
classmates whom I know and have their emails. (2010/01/19)
I was at Penn State from 1991 to 1996 as the Department Head of Civil Engineering. - - - - - I was the
Dean of Engineering at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan from 1996 to 2001 and then I took
the job at Cleveland State University as the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
(2001 to 2006). I stepped down by design to come back to teach for a few years before I retire. This will
serve as a good transition. There is no mandatory retirement for us, as you know. My plan is to retire
when I am 70 in May 2012. My health is good. If health is a problem, I can always retire slightly ahead of
the schedule. Our classes begin this week. This semester, I offer a special leadership course to those
who are currently or will become an academic administrator (Chair, Dean, etc.) to pass on my past
administrative experience on higher education. I will be busier and may not be able to write emails as
often as I like. The details of the reunion will be handled by Ben and others. I am confident it will be a
successful event. (2010/01/19)
