| In Memory of 陳茂森 (Mao-Sen Chen) After I received the Chu Chung Class ’60 Directory in mid 2010, I saw the phone number of Mao-Sen. I was very excited, so I called him immediately. We have lost contact since 1965 A lady answered the call. I asked if 陳茂森 was in. She said: “He was gone”. I knew what she meant, but I just wanted to confirm what I heard. I asked her again: “When would he come back?” She said that he left us fifteen years ago. It was due to stomach cancer. They have three kids. I felt so bad for a long while. I later found out there were twenty seven Chu Chung classmates left us. I knew twelve of them personally. Some of them were my classmates in Min-Fu Primary School like Mao-Sen. We moved to Chung-Shan Road, Hsinchu in 1947. Mao-Sen lived right across from us. In 1948, we both registered in Min-Fu. Over the next six years, we became good friends. We both went to Chu Chung for high school education. I never met his widow and kids; it must be that he was married after I came to U.S. in 1965. Mao-Sen was very popular and athletic. He was in the baseball team and played a very important role. He had a lot of friends came to visit him. I met quite a few new friends who came to see him. He did not get the college due to his financial situation. He became a primary school teacher. After I went to National Taiwan University, we went to movie every time when I came home. I remembered he asked me once that could I understand the English conversation in the American movies. I told him I was too busy to read the subtitle and had no time to listen the conversation. I told him that my English did not improve much in college. He was a very nice guy. He was handsome and personal. I bet none of our classmates would criticize him. I miss him a lot. I think it is life, there is nothing could do to change the fact. Sincerely, T.Y. Chuang (莊添裕), January 9, 2011 |
