WHEN THE LORD’S SUPPER IS administered, it is really the Body and Blood of Jesus that every individual receives in and with the bread and wine. Not that in some
magical manner something happens to the bread and wine while the Words of Institution are being read. If something spilled it is only bread and wine that are lost. And
that which remains in the cup after the Communion service is finished is no more holy than other wine.
The bread and wine in the Lord’s Supper can in this matter be compared to the Word. If a leaf out of my Bible should blow away in the woods so that I could not find it, it is
self-evident that this would not profane the Word,. What blew away was in one sense only paper and ink. And yet it is holy, and possesses eternal power because it is the
Word of God. But this holiness and eternal power are manifest only when the Word is read and I am influenced by it.
But the Word has an effect also on unbelievers who hear it. It builds up the believers and hardens the unbelievers. Thus also the Lord’s Supper. It is not only the believing
communicant that receives the Lord’s Body and Blood, but also the unbeliever. He that goes to the Lord’s Table in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to
himself and is guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord (I Corinthians 11:27-29). Just as the Christians came into real fellowship with the evil spirits by taking part in the
heathen sacrificial meals, even though they did not share the heathen faith, so also does the unbelieving guest at the Lord’s Table partake of the Body and Blood of Christ;
but this partaking brings judgment upon him (I Corinthians 10:20-21). It is just this aspect of the Lord’s Supper that shows how exalted and holy it is.
